Ugly Shirt Theory

““Follow effective action with quiet reflection. From the quiet reflection will come even more effective action.” -- Peter F. Drucker”

Imagine you’re going to a party in your new favorite shirt.

You feel bold, you wear it night after night.

Then you finally see a picture of yourself wearing it.

“THAT’S what I look like?”

Why didn’t anyone tell you it was ugly? (like, really ugly)

Because in my experience, unless you directly ask for criticism, you probably won’t get it.

Social norms make us polite at the expense of honesty.

And to be fair, we all have to get through the day somehow.

But that’s a real problem when you want to grow personally or professionally.

Your blind spots can compound over time until they’re not just bad habits—they’re deeply ingrained behaviors.

So how do you know if you’re wearing an “ugly shirt”?

You have to seek the truth.

  • Look for someone successful in the area you want to excel.
  • Ask for unfiltered feedback.
  • Give them explicit permission to be brutally honest.

Here’s a great framework I use: Ask for “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly”

The Good: an initial compliment to help soothe your sensitive little ego

The Bad: a bit more honesty — areas you probably already knew needed improving

The Ugly: brutally honest feedback you had no idea about

Yeah, it might sting initially.

But the only thing worse is going your whole life never realizing you’d been wearing an ugly shirt.

And, if you want to find books that expose other “ugly shirts”, head over to readar.ai to find the right book for you to read next.

Keep Seeking,
